Hello CMIers and friends!
The Country Directors (Pedro and I) are leaving tomorrow for Peru! We'll spend this week in Cuzco and Puno, finalizing arrangements for the group before the Session 1 travelers arrive next week.
First session travelers, I'm looking forward to meeting you at the Cuzco airport bright and early in the morning next week! In Cuzco, we'll conduct our training with our partner microfinance institution, Prisma, and then head onto Puno to work in the microfinance field for the rest of the summer!
I am so thrilled that all of our hard work with CMI this year is finally culminating in this exciting opportunity to contribute to microfinance firsthand. Thanks to everyone for making this possible! This summer will be a life-changing experience for CMI members, and we look forward to sharing our experiences with all of our friends, family members, and donors as well!

What is CMI?
- Carolina Microfinance Initiative
- CMI aims to relieve poverty by supporting the expansion of microfinance services to the 395+ million families who lack access. CMI provides established microfinance institutions with volunteers and capital to expand their services. We believe in empowering students as agents of global change. Thus, supporting international service in microfinance is at the core of our operational values. CMI is also based on the idea that the classroom should serve as a place to learn about AND solve global problems. Thus CMI operates via a course at the Kenan Flagler Business School, where students examine issues in microfinance and make investment decisions based on this education. CMI’s Peru Project is made possible by our partners, HELP International. HELP is a non-profit dedicated to helping eliminate poverty by sending American volunteers to work in the developing world. HELP has lent us their years of expertise and their solid reputation. Jennifer Boehme-Kumar, HELP’s Executive Director, has trained our volunteers in safety, cultural awareness, and team-building. We extend great thanks to our partners, HELP International (www.HELP-international.org).
